Blade made his debut in the 1970's Marvel series Tomb of Dracula. While
Blade's mother was in labor with him, she was bitten by the vampire Deacon
Frost. Because of this, Blade is a dhampir, one who has both human and
vampire blood. After the death of Blade's mother, he was raised by Jamal
Afari, a trumpet player and vampire hunter. He taught Blade how to live as a
musician and how to hunt vampires until Afari was attacked by Dracula.
Seeking revenge against Both Deacon Frost and Dracula, Blade dedicated his
life to hunting and destroying vampires and other supernatural creatures.
Blade often teamed up with other hunters, and during his search for Deacon
Frost, he formed an unlikely partnership with the vampire Hannibal King to
defeat their common enemy. Frost's attack on Blade's mother left Blade
trapped between the human and vampire world, but his curse was also a gift.
Blade discovered that he was immune to the vampire's bite, an ability that
would aid him in his life's work. Blade is also a skilled martial artist, a
quick swordsman and weapon master, and very street-wise. This deadly
combination inspires fear in those that he hunts, and even in Dracula, the
most powerful of all vampires.
